Show and Tell

Good Friday Morning!
Kelli over at http://kellishouse.blogspot.com/ is hosting show and tell. It is so much fun to see everyone's treasures.
This week I would like to show you one of my oldest cookbooks. It is the White House Cookbook and mine is copyrighted 1899.
Apparently, this is what the White House kitchen looked like in 1899.
Throughout the book, on the blank pages, someone has written recipes in a penmanship that has long been sent to the wayside. The writing is faded so badly on most of these pages that you really can't read them.

There are lots of cutouts and recipe cards in the book as well. I love it when I find hand written recipes.

Now since it is a cold, wintery day, I leave you with this recipe to fix for your family this weekend. Direct from the White House Cookbook!

Nothing like some stewed frogs to excite your family!

Have a great weekend!

Linda

Oh my goodness Linda, what a treasure you have. That is just amazing and may be quite valuable. Thank you so much for sharing it. It would be fun to go through the recipes and see what was cooking back then and how they cooked it. Hugs, Kathi

Think I'll pass on the stewed frogs! I love cookbooks anyway, but I especially love old ones. I think it's such a neat thing to see handwritten comments. It feels like you get a little glimpse of life the way it used to be! Thanks for sharing, and if you try the Stewed Frogs, let us know!!

My dad used to "gig" frogs from our pond and mom would cook up frog legs in the skillet. They would literally jump around in the pan!! My brothers and I would gather around the stove to watch.

Funny, frog legs are very expensive now.

But stewed frogs don't sound as tasty to me:)

The White House book is a treasure! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Hang on to that book and pass it down.

So much history and life packed into one book. There is always something magical about finding something handwritten inside an old book, even if it is just the dedication. Think I'll pass on the frogs tho!

LOLOLOLOL! I am laughing so hard, but in the south and at one of my grandma's family reunions, if I did not recognize a chicken leg on a plate I didn't eat it. And I only helped myself to meatless dishes. LOL! I shudder to think of what I have eaten at the table of my grandma's brother's dinner table and he would just tell me it was chicken...

That is a wonderful cookbook. Very valuable I'm sure.

What a treasure!!! Except for the Stewed Frog legs. I can't imagine, nor do I want to.
My sister and her husband recently spent some time in Louisianna and she told me she tried eating frog legs and alligator. I can't imagine that either!
I'll have my potatoes and chicken if you please.
I have a cookbook that belonged to my mom called Searchlight Recipe Book. The copyright date is 1937. There are a lot of handwritten recipes in it and some of the recipes I remember making when I was a girl and learning to cook and bake.
I love old books.

Oh, my goodness! This is amazing. but I think the frogs will have to go without me. I have eaten and enjoyed fried frog legs, even 'gigged' and cooked them myself back when I was Mother Nature's Flower Child! :) But stewed sounds a little different.
