This Friday I would like to show you my 1961 Sears Spring and Summer Catalog. I bought this catalog from ebay because it is my birth year. I love the clothes in this catalog! They are so bright and feminine.
Some of the clothing pictures are even in black and white. I can't imagine ordering a skirt with only a description of the color! There are also 9 pages of slip and 4 pages of hats! Most of the younger ladies that I know don't even own one slip! I love looking at the little girl dresses. They are so cute. It seems like todays fashions for little girls make them look like little teenagers. Not a look I particulary like. You could even order your makeup and fabric! There are 11 pages of just fabric, some of it in black and white pages. I love the bathing suits! I would so buy that blue one!
And of course there are your chenille bedspreads. I actually have a chenille bedspread on my bed now!
But my favorite thing that you could order from Sears are pigs! Yes! I said Pigs! Not just any pigs, but disease free pigs, starting at just $77.95!
Thanks for looking everyone! I'm on vacation starting today at 4:45 and will be off work until Monday, July 16th! We aren't going to journey too far from home because we don't want to leave my MIL alone too long. We may go to Monticello, Thomas Jeffersons home, for a day. We haven't been there in years and it is so beautiful.

Pigs? Oh may, did they really order their animals from a catalogue in former times? Chosing fabrics just from a black and white picture seems to be difficult, too.

Oh, Linda! What a treasure!! I grew up with a chenille bedspread and my girls have one on their bed now. Love the clothes!! Wish our current fashions would take a turn back towards some of those styles.

Oooo, I love this. I was a young girl in the early sixties and I remember wearing things like that. Those slips were huge! They were yards and yards of tulle underneath and our dresses stuck way out. It was fabulous.
How neat...Even though that was before my time I really enjoyed that. I loved that bathing suit also. I don't like revealing too much skin if you know what I mean :)

You can really see in some of the photos how Jackie K influenced fashion in those days. I like the idea of ordering a pig. Wonder if it was a pick up at the post office or if the pig was delivered!

What a neat thing to do! I may see if I could find one for my year. I love the styles. Like you say, I can't imagine ordering a dress or fabric from a black and white photo or just a description! And buying a pig through a Sears catalog -- I never knew you could do that back then!

Oh wow, having such an old Sears catalogue is so awesome...well I don't mean you're old cuz you were born in 1961...oh you know what I mean!! LOL It must be a hoot to go through the whole catalogue and see all the styles and such..omigosh and even pigs!! lol Now I wonder if I could find a 1957 Sears catalogue! hehe xox
What a treasure! My mom would order a lot of our clothing from catalogues-I guess it was easier than shopping with five children.
Sadly, she didn't order any pigs-I wonder how they were shipped?
I love the catalog! If I needed a pig I would certainly want it to be disease free!
I love the chenille spreads--but if you take a nap on one, you wear the mark on your face for the rest of the day! :-)
I have to admit those bathing suits are rather...frumpy, but at least we were COVERED back then! Living here at the beach, you would not believe some of the things I've seen on both men and women.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - I was 11 in 1961, and remember those clothes so well. I couldn't wait to grow up so I could wear heels and put my hair in a French roll, and a string of pearls with my beautiful dress....then, when I was old enough, it was the Age of Aquarius and hippies! Sigh....
I wonder what a pig costs these days??

I can remember going through a Sears catalog and circling every single thing that I wanted! My mom always called it a Wish Book...and what I wished for the most was the little chicks. Never could get my Dad to do that though...something crazy about "chickens can't live in your bedroom." Thanks for the wonderful memories...

I loved looking at these photos from the Sear's catalog!! What a wonderful idea to have one from your birth year. :o) I can't believe there were pigs for sale in them...haha! Who would have ever thought?! Have a wonderful vacation and enjoy your day trips.

What a great idea to look for things like that on eBay! I must have a look to see if there is anything like that around 1948 (showing my age, lol). I have some Aussie newspapers that were published on the day I was born, and it is fascinating to look at them and wonder what Mum's world was like while she was giving birth to me!

We married in '58. By '61, had a tiny home and one daughter and had lost another daughter, a day and a half after birth. Life comes at you fast. The good and the not-so-good. :-)
But anyway, I remember all those things in the catalogue. Other than the pigs. ,-)
